Covenant Groups at UUC

As we share our life experience of joys, concerns, and faith, we covenant to support one another in an atmosphere of confidentiality and encouragement. Form deep relationships with others in a committed small group setting, exploring topics in monthly get-togethers in each other's homes. Groups are open to both members and friends.

About Covenant Groups
In our highly mobile society, there is a need for relationship and connection between and among people. Covenant Groups are designed to foster connection and caring among their members, to provide an avenue for personal growth and spiritual development, and to strengthen the fabric of our religious community. Participation is open to all who are part of the UUC community.

How do Covenant Groups Work?
Covenant Groups are comprised of between five and twelve persons who agree to meet at least monthly. Most meetings are held in the homes of group members. Groups are guided by trained facilitators who meet regularly with our Associate Minister, Rev. Bill Welch and the Coordinator, Tiffany Boggs.
Groups will grow over time through the addition of new members and new groups will be formed as the need arises.

Serving the Community...Together
Each group decides for itself what service project(s) they would like to do (at least twice a year). The emphasis this year will be on service to our own religious community.

Meeting Format
The meeting format includes:
     Opening reading
     Check-in and sharing
Discussion on a predetermined topic. Examples: yearnings, loss, commitment, our own religious journeys, etc.
     Time for feedback
     Closing reading
Discussions are based around brief readings on the topic, which will be distributed in advance.
Meeting sessions are about two hours long.

Other UU Experiences
UU Congregations throughout the continent have been experiencing covenant groups for years. Here are some thoughts from those who have been part of such groups:

"People come to our churches to be lifted out of the ordinary, to be drawn up from the mundane, and to seek relief from the omnipresent materialism of our culture. Small groups allow this to unfold."
Rev. Robert L. Hill, SMALL GROUP MINISTRY

"Small Group Ministry is the spiritual development group that I’ve been seeking for a long time."
     UU Member, Augusta, ME

"Covenant Groups allow people to ‘grow their soul’ while retaining their professional life."
     Rev. Brent Smith
