Web Site Submission Basics

Goal

We all want to have the best web site we can for UUC. This will make it more useful to our members and let other folks know what a vibrant happening place UUC is.

Web pages should have at least one image.

toolsA balanced web page with "eye candy" [ images ] and the information people are looking for is very important. Web pages that are too short on information or have no images have little impact or usefulness.

Images can be in the format of a photo, chart, drawing, or art graphic.

Think about submitting information that people are looking for, not just what comes to mind. Put yourself in their shoes. They may know nothing about your committee or may be looking for specific information about an issue. Try to figure out what they need.

Suggestion: Have someone else read or edit what you have written. This may help find an important point that got left out because it seemed so obvious. A reader/editor can help make your information more useful. Write for UUC members but remember that other folks may make use of what you write, too.

Text

We are getting all types of file formats from different word processors. It is too difficult to support all these file formats. Please stick to standard generic old text. Your formatting gets lost when the web page is assembled anyway.

Textual Information should be sent either in the body of a text style email or an attached file. For emails you can simply "copy" and "paste" your info into the email. If that does not work for you, save the file as a text file.

Text Attachments: Do not just save your info as a doc, wps or other file format. Select "save as" in your file drop-down menu and select text, TXT, or Dos Text formats to save the file. Then you can attach it to your email.

Images

1. Internet images are preferred in jpg or gif. format. Other formats may not display properly or are not supported by browsers. We have image filters to convert your image but cannot guarantee we can handle everything. There are hundreds of formats out there. The filters support only a few dozen.

2. We do not want to have any close-up images of UUC children on the Internet. Some parents object to this, so only distant images where faces cannot be seen are considered appropriate for uuclearwater.org. Art or cartoon characters are preferred in this area.

3. Too many large images or images that have nothing to do with the purpose of that web page are to be avoided. Little butterflies or birdies are cute, but provide no information for that page. Small images of hammers, saws and paintbrushes work quite well for a Campus Facilities page. An image of our playground is right for a childrens' page.

4. All images have a copyright. If you take a photo or create a picture or image on paper or in a computer program, it is automatically covered by copyright at that time. There is no longer any requirement to publish the work or notify anyone of the copyright or even include a copyright notice.

If you send us a photo, chart, drawing, or artwork for inclusion on the web site, you are implying the transfer of that copyright from you for our special use.

If you send us an image that comes from a Corel, Print Shop, Microsoft, or other commercial image library, these images are usually copyrighted by them for personal use only. You can use it on a birthday card, or in an email, but not in a book or on the Internet. The key here is it cannot be "published" as is.

If you send us an image of this sort, please identify it. We will need to modify it so that it meets the regulations for copyright. More on U.S. Copyright Law can be found here
